Cara woke on December twenty-third with a tired but completely satisfied body.

She opened her eyes. Steph slept soundly beside her, snuggled up close.

Their night had been incredible, and she smiled to herself as she remembered all the ways she’d made Steph fall apart. The confidence she’d had in doing so? Electrifying. She smiled more deeply when she remembered everything Steph had done to her.

Then she sighed.

A holiday fling. It was all it could be. Not something she’d ever indulged in before, although she’d had the occasional one-night stand in the past. She had no regrets about how short-lived this could be. Well, that wasn’t true, but she pushed down the one regret that threatened to make itself known.

No, just a holiday fling. She mentally ticked off all the reasons why.

One, she and Steph were both on the rebound from relationships gone wrong.

Two, Cara only had a two-year placement here in the UK. When that was up, she had no idea where she would be next. Yes, it sounded as if Steph lived closed to London, where Cara would be based, but Cara’s job would take her all over Europe.

Three, they led completely different lives. Cara was career-driven and determined to see the world. Steph liked to hide away in her home in the country doing her sculpting.

But, a small voice in her head told her, that’s only what you know about her so far. If you took the time to get to know her⁠—

She sat up, shaking her head as if that would rid her brain of those dangerous thoughts.

“Wha—?” Steph mumbled.

“Shush,” Cara said, guiltily stroking Steph’s hair. “Go back to sleep.”

“Mm.” Steph rolled over and her breathing deepened once more.

Cara slipped out of the bed, pulled on some clothes and padded downstairs. Maybe coffee would help.

Sure, the small voice said. Coffee is well known for fixing problems caused by having more feelings than you care to admit for someone who is only supposed to be a holiday fling.

Screw you, Cara told it as she filled the coffee maker.
